No Lone Wolves Here

Ah-oooooooh! Yawns travel back and forth among wolves as well. More than 254 hours of observation at a Tokyo zoo revealed that wolves were more likely to yawn if another wolf nearby had just done so, especially if the two animals were close. Results showed that 50% of the time a wolf yawned after seeing another wolf do so, and wolves yawned only 12% of the time when they didn’t see the other wolf do so. “For a highly social animal such as a wolf, coordinating activities has obvious adaptive advantages, since it promotes social cohesiveness of the pack,” researchers stated

Monkey See, Monkey Do

Ooh-ooh-ah-ah, monkeys mimic yawns as well. Over the course of five years, researchers studied the daily activities of bonobo monkeys and their approach to the yawn contagion. Within species, they found that yawning was most “contagious” between subjects that shared a strong emotional bond – and this was true for humans and bonobos. Between species, humans were more proportionality more sensitive to the yawns of kin and friends than bonobos; but similarly to bonobos, humans were not as sensitive to yawns produced by those with whom they had a weak emotional bond. So, while humans may traditionally be considered the most empathetic species – and we are more responsive to yawns from our loved ones than our bonobo friends – when it comes to an empathetic yawn for those we don’t know as well, we say ooh-ooh-ah-ah just like our primate friends.

Birds of a Feather Yawn Together

But what about non-mammalian species? In the May 2015 journal of Animal Cognition, researchers revealed fascinating findings about budgies, a common Australian bird species. The birds were capable of copying yawns, too! “To date, this is the first experimental evidence of contagious yawning in non-mammalian species,” said study leader Andrew Gallup of State University of New York. These researchers believe that yawning is not an involuntary action, but rather a primitive form of showing empathy.

Truly Man's Best Friend

In a study by researchers at the University of London, 29 pet owners volunteered their dogs to sit through two tests. In the first test, scientists simulated a realistic loud yawn every time the dog made eye contact. In the control test, scientists opened their mouths without making a noise. What they found was incredible; when the experimenters mimicked yawning in the first test, 21 out of 29 dogs showed contagious yawning. None of the dogs in the control group yawned. The results of the study support mounting evidence that dogs can indeed empathize with humans. Don’t believe it? Check out these videos capturing the phenomenon:
